About our tissue services
The Wisconsin Tissue Bank (WTB) a non-profit tissue recovery
agency, was started in 1987 in response to a donor
family at
Aurora St. Luke's Medical Center in Milwaukee requesting to donate organs and
tissues. At that time a tissue procurement agency did not exist in
the state of Wisconsin. The medical professionals and administration
at Aurora St. Luke's identified a need to provide families throughout
Wisconsin an opportunity to donate tissue. Surgeons in Wisconsin
desperately needed bone and soft tissue for reconstructive, oncological, orthopedic and spinal procedures. Thus, the Wisconsin
Tissue Bank was established with a commitment to donor families and
to increase availability of tissue to individuals who could benefit
through tissue transplantation.
Referral
The Wisconsin Tissue Bank will work in a cooperative effort with
hospital personnel in the identification and referral of tissue
donors. Recovery coordinators are available 24 hours a day to
evaluate potential donors and assist with obtaining consent.
Wisconsin Tissue Bank participates in a coordinated effort to
facilitate organ and tissue donation with the federally designated
Wisconsin Organ Procurement Organizations and the Eye Bank.
Recovery
Wisconsin Tissue Bank recovery coordinators are skilled
professionals who are certified by the American Association of
Tissue Banks (AATB) or the North American Transplant Coordinators
Organization (NATCO).
Members of the recovery team include recovery coordinators,
orthopedic residents affiliated with the Medical College of
Wisconsin and tissue recovery specialists.
Processing
As a recovery agency, the Wisconsin Tissue Bank maintains
affiliations with processing agencies that focus on the respectful
stewardship of the donated gift. We are unconditionally committed to
providing tissues that have met the most stringent safety protocols
to the surgeons in Wisconsin.
